Portable MP3 players: innovative devices for recording qualitative interviews

Are portable MP3 players suitable for recording high quality interviews in qualitative nursing research? This review article explores the advantages and usefulness of portable MP3 players for recording qualitative interviews, focusing on one particular brand of machine, and describes the experiences of the authors.  The overall quality of the recordings using portable MP3 is improved not just because of the audio file quality but also because of the reduced attention to technical aspects while recording interviews.  The article provides a detailed description of the technical aspects in the use of portable MP3 players.

This review focused on the advantages of portable MP3 players for recording interviews.

Research design/methodology

Rather than a review of studies, this paper reports on the experiences and advantages of using electronic devices for recording audio interviews based upon the authors' opinions. No research design or article search methodology are described.  There are a limited number of cited articles (16) and some of them are from sources that are not peer reviewed.

Eligibility criteria

There were no specific eligibility criteria. Many of the cited literature are correspondence essays, letters to the editor, and books, including a MP3 player users' manual. No comparisons were made to other MP3 players; there were qualitative comparisons with older electronic audio recording devices. No hard data was analyzed.

Observational studies and trials could be performed with portable MP3 players in order to compare different models as well other types of recording devices.  This will assess the real impact of the use of these electronic devices in recording high quality interviews for qualitative health and nursing research.
