An interactive, advanced graphical rendering system is demonstrated on a PDA. The PDA’s rendering performance, based on its frame rate per second, was slower compared to a desktop platform. An interactive, illustrative 3D graphical rendering system may be displayed on a PDA, but its performance is limited by the PDA’s CPU clock rate, limited memory, slow bus speed, and its instruction and data cache size.

VALIDITY: This was simply a descriptive demonstration of MobileVis, an interactive, graphical rendering system for PDAs.

Local visualization of an advanced interactive, illustrated 3D graphical rendering system, MobileVis, was demonstrated on a Dell Axim x51v PDA with 240 x 320 screen resolution, Intel 624-MHz XScale CPU with 64 MB RAM, 16 MB of video memory, 32 KB instruction cache, and 32 KB data cache, running Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0.
PDA-based graphics and text rendering system versus a desktop platform (a 1.6 GHz Pentium M CPU with 512 MB RAM and a Nvidia GeForce 6200 graphics card).
MobileVis was demonstrated on a single mobile device and desktop platform. The performance of the respective platforms were reported.
The PDA interactive, illustrative rendering system’s performance was reported as its frame rate per second. The frame rate was 2-9 times slower than a desktop platform (slower with more detailed models and rendering modes that employed more complicated algorithms).
