“Is the use of
free, open source, computer-assisted software suitable for the transcription of
interviews in qualitative research?” This review article explores the
usefulness of software for support in the transcription of qualitative interviews based upon the experiences of the authors who are nurse researchers. This transcription process is not conducted automatically, but the software acts as an aid for the researcher in reducing the
recordings into manageable segments for transcription or insertion into data
analysis software. The review focused on a particular software package and described the advantages of its use. The software makes it easier to transcribe audio to text, reduces the time it takes, and therefore increases the opportunities for data analysis.

“Is the use of free, open source, computer-assisted software suitable for the transcription of interviews in qualitative research?”
There is no specific evaluation of the “intervention” itself. The authors describe their experiences with using the software during the transcription of audio recordings of qualitative interviews.
The article focuses its analysis on the Transcriber software package, version 1.5.1. The authors describe related software for management and editing of audio files.
HIGHLIGHTS: The software helps in the process of manual transcription of audio files.
IMPLICATIONS: The software itself does not automatically convert the audio files into text files, but helps during the transcription process by reducing the recording into manageable segments for transcription or insertion into data analysis software.
GENERALIZABILITY: The points expressed in this review are applicable to qualitative clinical research and assessment, particularly in nursing research. However, more studies, trials and reviews are needed to assess its real impact and significance.
